3 of the best markets on the Mornington Peninsula
Tweet Published on 20th November 2014 in Blog, Mornington Peninsula EventsMore Australians than ever are taking advantage of Australia's flourishing farmers' market scene, flocking to these organised events on an increasingly regular basis. Many farmers' markets rely heavily on organic produce such as fruit, vegetables, grains and other crops, along with artisan-made foods.
The organic farming industry is growing at a rate of around 12 per cent a year, according to research from IBIS World, so it's no surprise that more and more markets keep popping up in every corner of the country. If you're wondering what to do on Mornington Peninsula when you're next visiting this sunny strip of land, check out the following local markets.
Mornington Midweek Market
The Wednesday Main Street Market in Mornington is the longest-running regional market of its kind in Victoria, operating since 1983. It's home grown, home made and home baked, which means everything you find here has been lovingly produced on the Peninsula. Some stallholders have been lining the streets here for more than 15 years, showcasing the pride the people here have in their region. Purchase fresh produce, plants, crafts and treats you can eat on the spot. It operates regardless of the weather.
Mornington Farmers' Market
This market takes place on the second Saturday of every month and offers locals and visitors the chance to buy seasonal products directly from growers and makers. Stock up on freshly baked sourdough breads, organic produce, grass-fed meat, Mt Martha mussels and local cheeses, or treat yourself to a bottle of locally produced wine.
An added bonus of this market is the ability to speak directly the producers and farmers to learn more about the lifecycle of your purchases. It's one of just two markets on the Peninsula accredited by the Victorian Farmers' Markets Association, adding an extra layer of authenticity and support for stallholders. There's also live music on offer at this market, so bring the kids along to enjoy a day out.
Emu Plains Market
Established by locals at the end of 2012, Emu Plains Market is one of the highlights of Mornington Peninsula's market offerings. Flanked by a stunning bush setting and featuring more than 180 colourful stalls, Emu Plains Market is a fantastic destination for anyone looking for quality made handcrafted items, vintage pieces, sustainably made clothing and items alongside the classic market mainstays of farm-fresh local produce and gourmet food.
The market even has a resident band – the Whisky Gypsys – to entertain the masses. It's held from October to April on the third Saturday of every month at Balnarring's Emu Plains Reserve.
