3 ways that golfing at Moonah Links is more than a normal day on the course

It's wound its way through the social fabric of countries all over the planet; enduring over 500 years of human history to claim a place today as one of the globe's most popular hobbies. Times have changed and golf has changed with them, keeping up with what a contemporary player wants and needs. In the beginning there wasn't even a hole, but now there are laser-guided putters. The first set of official rules weren't drawn up until the 1700s, over 200 years after the game's invention. Air-conditioned clubhouse with cold drinks? Forget about it.
Fortunately, we live in a time where golf is at the height of its powers. There are thousands of gorgeous courses with their own unique features and experiences. Golf courses in Victoria are among the finest in the world, but even in such a high-calibre group, the courses at Moonah Links on the stunning Mornington Peninsula are in a class of their own.
Here are three reasons why.
1. Double or nothing
Playing on one great golf course is an occasion to relish, but there are two completely independent courses with their own special quirks and pleasures to be found at Moonah Links, making it unique amongst resorts in Victoria.
The Legends course is described by architect Ross Perrett as a "tribute to past champions who have contributed to the rich history of Australian golf," and its not hard to see why. Ranked in the top 30 in Australia by Ausgolf, each hole was designed with the traits and styles of certain legendary players in mind. It's the perfect course for the casual golfer, or for someone who is just starting out. With raised tees that provide sweeping views over the landscape, it's easy to fantasise about taking your own well-earned spot in that glorious pantheon one day, and then hooking the ball wide into a bunker. Again.
2. The Leviathan
If you're after something that's a bit more challenging, the Open course is waiting for you. The only circuit ever to be custom designed for the Australian Open, and one of the longest in the world, the Open is widely considered to be one of the most difficult golfing challenges in the country. Nicknamed the 'Leviathan,' there's nothing quite like taming this beast, and it's an experience that you can only get at Moonah Links.
In the words of five-time British Open winner Peter Thomson, it's "a mighty and ferocious test of golfing ability, the likes of which even the top pros only occasionally experience." You don't have take his word for it though, book a tee time online and experience the Leviathan for yourself.

3. Twilight golf
Victoria is beautiful all year round, and with so many different things to do on Mornington Peninsula, it can be difficult to cram everything into a weekend. At Moonah Links, you can arrange to tee off at 3 p.m. when it's cooler and you've spent the day exploring the best of what the area has to offer. There's nothing better than finishing the 18th hole just as the sun is setting, and heading straight on in to Pebbles Restaurant for a well-earned glass of the region's famous pinot noir and a seasonal menu to peruse.
A game of twilight golf is the perfect way to ensure you get the full Moonah Links experience, without having to sacrifice a day at the vineyard or the hot springs. If you'd really like to compact the experience down to the essentials, a nine-hole game on the Open course is also available.
The view across the Open Course from Pebbles is spectacular to behold.
