McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Trail
Mornington Peninsula's official tourism website notes this is the leading sculpture park and gallery in all of Australia, so it's a must visit and just a 20 minute drive from the Peninsula. Situated amidst 16 hectares of verdant bushland, dotted with serene lakes and landscaped gardens, the McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Trail is picturesque and fun for the whole family.
There are more than 100 sculptures here, many by critically acclaimed Australian artists. For those not familiar with contemporary art, there are guided tours and interesting lectures on the sculptures themselves – the concept behind the artwork, and how the artist articulated their vision into the dynamic three-dimensional forms in front of you.
After your art adventure, you can indulge in wine and delicious food at the on-site McClelland cafe, which overlooks the sculptures and the lake.
Gordon Studio Glassblowers
Husband and wife duo Eileen Gordon and Grant Donaldson are famous around the country for their skills and talents with hot glass blowing, so visiting their gallery and studio in Mornington Peninsula's hinterland is a treat.
You'll get a live view of the sculptural glass artworks, vases, platters and bowls being blown since the gallery is specially designed with a mezzanine floor viewing platform. Be mesmerised by the artistry and workmanship as the glass is twisted, gently coaxed and blown with immense heat to transform into one-of-a-kind pieces. Why not purchase a plate or bowl as a unique memoir of your holiday?
Manyung Gallery
Established in 1969, Manyung Gallery is the oldest on the Mornington Peninsula. This historic gallery comprises ten 'sub-galleries' including sculpture gardens and courtyards, with more than 200 affordable and original artworks to peruse or purchase.
Painting and sculptures abound here, and once you have soaked in the strokes and chatted about the colours, explore the grounds. The gallery is housed in a building inspired by Tuscan castles, and this striking architecture is surrounded by a moat complete with a drawbridge. Framed by oak trees, this gallery is a delightful place to while away the afternoon.
The Peninsula Studio Trail
If all of this has whet your appetite for the artistic destinations around the area, consider doing the Peninsula Studio Trail (PST). This is a self-guided journey, equipping you with a trail map so you can explore the various studios and galleries at your own pace. During your PST, you'll get to meet artists in their studios as they create works and based on your conversations with them, they will recommend another artist studio to visit that is in sync with your personal tastes of art collection or appreciation.
All the creative professionals and artists involved in PST are part of a collective, so you can rely on these recommendations being spot on. You may just find the perfect piece for your lounge or discover an artist whose works sing to you as a collector.
Finish off your afternoon (or weekend) of art appreciation by indulging in a quality cup of coffee at one of the charming local cafes, or head back to your accommodation at Moonah Links resort and debrief about the colours, themes and vibe of the artworks you admire over a drink and meal at our acclaimed restaurant Pebbles. An artful conclusion to your creatively stimulating day!
