There is always so much to do on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, with activities ranging from a round on the world-class golf courses to the beautiful treks through some of the most impressive natural walks in the region. At Moonah Links, some of our favourite events are the seasonal ones that come around every year, providing highlights for groups of all ages and interests. We always look forward to these annual celebrations, and the opportunities that they provide to catch up with some of our regular guests while networking with other businesses from across the Peninsula.
One of our favourite occasions is the yearly Winter Wine Festival, which is a great way to introduce travellers to some of the best beverages that are produced in the area. Even for the locals, there's always some new treat to surprise and delight the taste buds. Read on to find out more about the event, and how best to experience it from your base here at Moonah Links.
Winter Wine Festival
The festival is held every year over the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend and marks one of the high points of the Mornington Peninsula culinary calendar. The event takes place at the Red Hill Showground, which is conveniently located about a 20 minutes' drive away from our resort, in the heart of the local winemaking industry.
The event boasts a range of wine-related activities, ranging from exhibitions to tastings, that provide tourists and locals alike with an opportunity to explore a broad selection of brands, blends and varietals. With a spectrum of flavours that is out of this world, with products from nearly 50 different wineries on offer, so bring an appetite!
Your ticket to the event also includes two meals and a tasting book that catalogues the different tipples on offer, so if you find one that you like you won't have to spend hours researching what it was called when you get home.
Wine on the Mornington Peninsula
The Mornington Peninsula is best known for two specific types of wine, and they are very, very different from each other. This is great if you're travelling in a group with opposing tastes, as it means nobody will be left without the experience of a local drink. When you're looking for good food pairings, the friendly wait staff at Pebbles Restaurant will be able to help you find a delicious combination for your meal when you get back to the resort.
For the die-hard red fans, there's the famous pinot noir of the region, described by local wine pioneer Richard McIntyre as one of the most difficult of grapes to look after. But when it's done right, it is decidedly difficult to beat. For fans of white wine, the chardonnay delivers a range of flavours that reflects the cool, temperate climate of the Peninsula.
Wine may not be your thing, but don't worry about being excluded, as a cornucopia of alternate drinks are also produced in the area, ranging from craft beers to unique spirits. There really is something for everyone.
Make a weekend of it
The Winter Wine Festival itself takes place on the Saturday of the long weekend, but that certainly doesn't mean that you should only stick around for the one day. Check into a room at Moonah Links and make a holiday of the event.
Head over to the nearby hot springs or treat yourself to a day of pampering our spa. With so many things to do on the Mornington Peninsula, the long weekend is a great opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of city life with a glass of wine in your hand and a smile on your face.
