3 aquatic experiences you can’t miss on Mornington Peninsula

Published on 21st November 2014 in Blog, Mornington Peninsula Activities

The serene setting of Mornington Peninsula presents the perfect opportunity for aquatic adventures. With the ocean practically on the doorstep of your Mornington Peninsula accommodation, and the Peninsula's location between Port Phillip and Western Port Bays, it's easier than ever to dive into crystal clear waters and experience what lies beneath. Here are three examples of ocean-inspired experiences you shouldn't miss.

Snorkelling

The Peninsula's 260km coastline is a haven for marine activity, with more than 500 fish species and 1,000 marine plant varieties. Snorkellers and scuba divers alike can explore the Octopuses' Garden trail, which spans 200m, while an underwater visit to Rye pier may reveal creatures emerging towards the light of your torch.

More than 60 shipwrecks dot the Peninsula, providing plenty of opportunity to explore the depths of the ocean floor.

Fishing

The fishing is excellent on the Peninsula, and you can either cast a line out from the pier or shore or board a fishing charter or cruise. Adults will need a current fishing licence, which can be purchased online or at a service station.

If you fish from Mornington Pier you can expect to catch species such as Australian salmon, snapper, silver trevally, King George whiting and leatherjacket. Patterson Pier can give you access to bream, mulloway, flathead and yellow-eye mullet, while fishing expeditions deeper into the ocean offer the chance to snag bigger game fish.

Stand up paddleboarding

Peninsula Stand Up Paddle (PSUP) gives you the tools and skills you need to paddleboard your way through waterways around Port Phillip Bay and Western Port Bay. You can get couple, family and group lessons, along with fitness workouts and sessions for everyone from beginners to experts. You can hire boards, paddles, leg ropes and wetsuits, giving you everything you need to get started.
