Step back in time on the Mornington Railway
Tweet Published on 27th January 2015 in Blog, Corporate Travel and Events, Mornington Peninsula ActivitiesMornington Peninsula has a long and rich history, stretching back into the 19th century. It's part of what makes it such an interesting and popular destination for holidays in Victoria.
From Port Nepean to the many museums on the peninsula, there are plenty of opportunities to discover the interesting stories the area has to tell while learning about it's past. If you're keen on learning more about Mornington Peninsula's history and looking for fun activities for the whole family, why not take a trip back in time on the Mornington Railway?
A heritage railway
The heritage broadgauge railway runs between the towns of Moorooduc and Mornington and is managed by a team of dedicated locals who are passionate about maintaining Mornington Peninsula's links with the past. The railway closed down in 1981, having been in operation for more than 90 years.
In recent decades, large sections of the track have been carefully restored 'just as they used to be' to allow modern-day passengers to recreate the 11-kilometre round trip. Step back in time as you board the carriage and listen to the 'toot' of the traditional steam engine as you make your way across the peninsula.
To add to the authenticity of the experience, the original 100-year-old carriages are used for the journey.
Taking the trip
The railway usually runs on the first three Sundays of every month, but extra journeys often take place around holidays or festivals, so enquire in advance if you're planning on taking a trip. You can access the railway from the main Moorooduc Station on Two Bays Road.
If you enjoy your trip on the railway, you might consider signing up for the Mornington Railway Driver Experience, which gives you the chance to drive either a steam or diesel train. You can also charter a group tour on the railway, which could serve as the perfect way to round out a corporate event at Moonah Links resort.
